About
Driving European Protein Diversification
with Novel Foods Based on Alternative Proteins

Mission
EPIC-SHIFT is an innovative, EU-funded research project dedicated to exploring alternative protein sources from insects, fungi, algae, bacteria, and agricultural by-products.
Our mission is to reshape the EU food system by creating a comprehensive, unbiased knowledge base on the environmental, social, and economic potential of these groundbreaking protein sources.

Our work
- A consortium of 20 partners will examine the environmental, social, and economic aspects of alternative proteins and their potential to reshape the EU food system sustainably and equitably.
- The project’s goal is to build a comprehensive, unbiased knowledge base on novel foods based on alternative proteins and their impact on food systems.
EPIC-SHIFT is an acronym coming from the full project name.
Securing Holistic and Impactful Food Systems Transformation with Novel Foods Based on Alternative Proteins (EPIC-SHIFT)
The project officially launched in November 2024. Over the next three years, 20 organisations will work together to build a comprehensive and robust knowledge base.
The research will focus on various novel foods derived from alternative protein sources (NFAP), evaluating them from environmental, social, and economic perspectives.
Seven different NFAP will be assessed at scale, from the protein type to the final product. The project will use these findings to provide recommendations on marketing, regulatory approval, infrastructure, and investment needed to support long-term growth.
